Vayne is one of the scariest late game carries in the game, but she pays a heavy price for it. Her effective range is short for a marksman, so she has to walk into danger to do anything, and she has no waveclear and no ranged poke to speak of. Early on she is genuinely weak: before items come online she loses most straight up trades, and her only real defensive tools are Tumble, a short dash on a cooldown, and Condemn, which knocks an enemy back and only stuns if it pins them against a wall. To beat Vayne, bully her off the wave before she scales, bring early damage that wins the laning phase, or stack so much frontline and crowd control that she never gets a safe window to kite. Tanks who can simply lock her down or wall off her space, and lane bullies who out trade her early, give her the most trouble. When you pick Vayne, you are betting on the late game, so respect anything that can punish your first fifteen minutes.
