Ryze hits like a freight train once he gets rolling, but he is one of the most grounded mages in the game. He has no dash and no escape beyond Flash, and his ultimate is a team teleport, not a get-out button, so he cannot reposition out of trouble. Early on he is mana hungry and his Overload range is short for a mage, which means he has to step up to do real damage and gets punished for it. His lockdown, Rune Prison, only becomes a hard root once Spell Flux is on the target, so before he sets that up his snare is just a slow. To beat Ryze, bring mobility to dodge his bolts and dive him, a spell shield to eat his root, or enough early pressure to bully the immobile mage off the wave before he scales. When you pick Ryze, you are betting on out-scaling and out-grinding the lane, so respect anyone who can blink on top of you or lock you down first.
